Live folk music in aid of Maxability: The Jellyman's Daughter

Saturday 20 May 2023 7.30pm

19 Greenacre Walk N14 7DB

202305 jellymans daughter

Scottish group The Jellyman's Daughter mixes their unique vocal harmonies with wild and visceral cello, driving guitar and sweet mandolin. Emily Kelly and Graham Coe write their songs together with a focus on doing something new. Emily's honeyed voice and Graham's soft introspective tone have an almost matching vocal range, which can have audiences puzzling over who is singing which harmony line - and they are often joined by long-time pal Jamie Francis with his superb multi-style 5-string banjo playing, and we shall be hearing this awesome threesome tonight!

Their 2014 debut album established The Jellyman's Daughter as something fresh and exciting. Scotland's Sunday Herald made it one of their Top Albums of the Year, noting that "Graham can make his instrument as percussive as a drum, as grounded as a bass or as sweet as a fiddle... when Kelly and Coe sing together, their harmonies squeeze the heart."

They spent 2018 and 2019 touring Australia before rapturous audiences, giving their final concert in the Sydney Opera House. They started 2020 promoting Wake-Up Call, which had them booked at festivals and shows in the UK, Australia, Europe and America, before the pandemic brought everything to a sudden halt. Nevertheless, as patrons of the Music Venue Trust, they helped to raise money for struggling venues, finally releasing a Christmas album and music video that saw them playing in ten of Edinburgh's beloved (but empty!) music venues, and their song was picked up by three major BBC radio stations.

Jamie Francis is a Cumbria-based banjo player, guitarist and songwriter. He started giggingat the age of 12, and grew up surrounded by both the blues music popular in his home town of Maryport, and the Irish folk music played by his father. His playing and song-writing styles reflect these varied influences. Having attended the Brighton Institute of Modern Music, where he received a 1st Class BA Hons in Music Performance, Jamie started collaborating with Sam Kelly. Both Graham and Jamie also play in Sam's BBC Award-winning Folk band Sam Kelly and the Lost Boys, who have enthralled Maxability audiences on a number of occasions.

Emily, Graham and Jamie are delighted to be invited to play for Maxability, performing songs from their previous recordings and some newer compositions from their forthcoming release.
