Shaping a new suspected skin cancer service in North Central London

Tuesday 16 May 2023 12.00pm - 1.30pm

Online

We would like user/patient involvement to help shape a new suspected skin cancer service in North Central London

Who should attend?

  • Anyone with experience of skin cancer services (even if cancer was not diagnosed) whether personally or through caring for others.
  • Anyone who has experience of being referred on any cancer pathway.
  • Anyone with personal experiences of healthcare who is keen to support improvements.

Skin cancer is the fifth most common cancer in the UK and dermatology services receive more urgent referrals for suspected cancer than any other type of cancer. The demand for referrals is increasing and reasons for this include an increasingly ageing population, rising expectations of skin appearance, improved treatments and the growing number of people living with skin conditions (such as skin cancer, leg ulcers and atopic eczema). The skin service also has significant challenges such as workforce shortages, appointment backlogs and inadequate triage and IT systems.

The North Central London Cancer Alliance is working with its partners to re-design the suspected skin cancer referral service (from primary care to consultant assessment). This new service will make use of teledermatology – where high-quality images of a patient’s skin are sent electronically for investigation by hospital-based skin specialists. Teledermatology is already used in many skin services across the country (including in North Central London) and is recommended by the British Association of Dermatologists.

We are looking forward to getting your views on specific issues that affect user experience when rolling out a new teledermatology service.
