St Harmonica's Blues Club: Laurie McVay & the High Rollers + Big Alan Craig

While we know that past members of Doc K’s Bluesband retire to the Isle of , Laurie McVay and the High Rollers come out of the IoW to play in venues around the UK and Europe. We’re delighted to finally host them at St Harmonica’s Blues Club - a previous attempt 3 years ago was scuppered by Covid 19, but now it’s all systems go for Friday.

LAURIE McVAY is one of Britain’s most distinctive blues singer/songwriters and instrumentalists. Blues in Britain magazine described Laurie as an ‘excellent harp player and a brilliant singer’ whilst he has been described in Germany 'like a cross between Robert Cray and Sonny Boy Williamson’

Laurie’s work with his band The High Rollers highlights his talent as a musician and performer. Laurie’s vocal style is modern but deeply rooted, soulful and honest. To quote another critic, ‘Laurie pulls off the rare trick of being soulful with a British accent’. Laurie McVay has earned many plaudits for his songwriting, as showcased on his two studio albums, My Kind of Blues and East Side Blues. His songs take in a wi,de range of blues styles and draw also from Southern Soul, funk and jazz. This music is unusually melodic and uncommonly soulful. His band, the High Rollers comprises musicians of the highest pedigree: Laurie McVay, vocals, harmonica, guitar; Graham Matthews, drums; Tim Hollis on bass; Andy Charles on lead guitar and Ray Drury on keyboards. Don’t miss them!

We’re looking forward to the support act too, when former St Harmonica’s regular Big Alan Craig travels down from his Edinburgh home to entertain us.

Support act starts at 8.30pm, followed by two sets from the main act starting around 9.15pm.

Admission is free to card holding St Harmonica’s Blues Club Members (membership costs just £10 for the year) otherwise £10 on the door. The hat is passed around to pay for the musicians.
