The future of Broomfield House: Back on the agenda?

Live theatre in the park this weekend

The summer (?) weather has not cooperated quite as well as it could have with this year's Broomfield Summer Festival, but the forecast is looking good for this weekend, when the final two theatrical events will be staged in the Broomfield Bowl. Prepare to be amused...and moved.

Broomfield Conservatory reopens its doors!

Broomfield Conservatory has now reopened to the public. Visiting hours are 2.30 to 4.30 on Wednesdays and Sundays. On Sunday 5th September there will be a sale of house plants to raise funds for the upkeep of the Conservatory.

The interview is packed with information and ideas and I've picked out just a few of the points. Watching the interview, if you weren't aware of it already, you'll soon realise that, in Sarah's words, the Greenery is 'so much more than a park café'.

Building a multigenerational chill-out space

A new 'chill-out' space in Broomfield Park which was formally opened last Wednesday has been designed and built by pupils from Broomfield School to provide somewhere for people of different generations to spend time together in the park. The project is a collaboration between the school, the Palmers Greenery community cafe, the Friends of Broomfield Park and the charity Build Up.

A skatepark for Broomfield Park?

Two years ago Palmers Green resident Joseph, then aged 14, wrote a highly personal and persuasive letter to his local councillors suggesting that young people would greatly benefit from a skate park in Broomfield Park. A group of local parents have now begun a campaign to fulfil Joseph's vision and have launched an online petition. Friends of Broomfield Park have said that they would welcome a feasibility study and more detailed proposals and will be interested to hear what their members and other local residents think about the idea.

Making Palmers Greener in 2021: Become a tree donor

When at the end of 2020 Friends of Broomfield Park announced the launch of their Tree Project, they were surprised (and delighted) when individuals and businesses offered to donate trees for planting in the park. Obviously, they didn't turn down the offers and are now seeking further donations so that they can make their planting plans even more ambitious and turn Palmers Green even greener.

Bed-time in Broomfield Park

Gardener Vic Black writes that people have told her that at one time there were up to 12 gardeners tending to the flowerbeds in Broomfield Park. More recently, however, there has been no brigade of park staff to keep the beds in check, so many were sadly reclaimed by the weeds. And that would probably still be the case, if the Friends of Broomfield Park had not stepped in...

Vic Black, one of the volunteers who have been maintaining and replanting the historic long border in Broomfield Park, is a qualified gardener and is available for work redesigning or just tending gardens in the Palmers Green/Bounds Green area.

Although lockdown prevented the annual Remembrance service in Broomfield Park from taking place today, 11 November, the Friends of Broomfield Park held an informal wreath laying ceremony. After a two minutes silence at 11am, Kim Lumley, co-chair of the Friends laid a wreath at the cairn.

Walks in the park that warm the heart

A 92-year old Palmers Green resident has raised more than £1200 for a hospital neonatal unit by daily walks in Broomfield Park. By the end of the month she's aiming to have walked 50 kilometres, visiting the bench the commemorates her late husband, in support of the FiftyforFinnley campaign. Her daughter, Jill Reidy, cut off from her mother by the lockdown, has sent me her story to warm readers' hearts.
